Play hide and seek, especially if it is dark any of those 8 hours. My sisters and I would play that for hours when I was a kid. At nine they should be old enough to play most board games as long as you're patient with them. I would bet that anything out of the ordinary would be a lot of fun for them. Maybe teach them to cook or bake something. You could also try the following website. There are tons of age appropriate ideas on there. Good luck and good for you for wanting them to do something besides video games!

How about board games like monopoly, risk, heroscape, bingo. Card games (War can take hours!) Look up some engineering challenges on the internet like building a bridge out of toothpicks and see whose bridge can hold the most weight, or an insulated container made out of only basic things like paper that you can put an egg in and drop it but the egg won't break.
Look up some at home science experiments and try them out. Get out the flour and water and newspaper and do some paper mache.
Find an old radio or clock and take it apart to see how it works.
Pictionary is fun and so is charades.
Good luck!

play tv tag, bottle bowling use old washed out bottles from the recycling line them up like they are in real bowling get asoft ball or tennisball something soft that wont break anything than get each kid to try knocking them down they should have a blast especially if ones a girl the others a boy when your 9 theres lots of girl boy competition, put on a movie they both like, put music on and sing, I know its a snow day Im off school today too but you could get them bundled up and play in the snow. Fill squirt bottles with water put diffrent food coloring in shake it up they can make colored pictures in the snow I remember doing this when I was younger around that age I had a blast

How about Simon Says? We also used to play a memory game. One peson starts by saying I am going to the beach (or camping, hiking whatever) and I am taking a towel (or any other appropriate object) The other person adds to it and repeats the previous item, first one to omit something loses. We also played category. You challenge the other person to name similar items. One question could be; name six candies that don't have any chocolate in them, or six types of dogs etc. Hope this helps you.

hide and seek, with a toy instead of people. or card cames are great - war, memory, fish, speed, gin, etc. All kids love to play Fort - create a fort out of sheets and boxes and chairs and what-not. 20 questions is fun, for a while. Pictionary, charades... if the kids are fun, they'll be into anything creative. Good luck.

My son just turned 10, and his best friend is a girl. They like to play board games, like boggle or sorry or monopoly. They also really like to do karaoke - we have an inexpensive Disney microphone. Hide and seek is always a favorite. You could also build and paint a model, or make that dough with flour, salt and water and use cookie cutters to make shapes, then bake and paint them.

my little brother is nine, and basically he likes to build stuff (like with magnetix or just any old blocks), or you could play a game with them-something interactive-maybe 'Scene It?'.
