I've been working out at home, but i'm not sure what to do exactly to actually see some results.

(yeah i was chubby when i was a kid and i kinda grew and lost the belly but not the love handles...)

Try a Taebo workout tape. It's great for a total body workout and I found that it really helped shrink my stomach...including those love handles!

Cross arm crunches : Elbow to the opposite knee (repeat that over and over)

Yes you're a good size.
