Why does my dog accept strangers into the house but attack them as they leave? Is this a Shihtzu trait?

Shihtzus are not known for liking strangers at all, in fact they are usually wary or indifferent.
He hasn't got an agression problem as such just snaps at person as they leave

yes I am afraid it is !! I had one for about 4 years. She would let anyone come into the house ,,,pet her, and show her all kinds of attention. But ONCE they started out the door to leave, she would go crazy,, barking and snapping at their feet. Hope this helps,, Good Luck with your dog.

not a shihtzu trait as i know.

we have a very placid shihtzu, placid at most times but when someone else comes into the house stranger or not he gets very over-excited, but never attacks.

there are so many dog trainers out there who may be able to help if it is getting a real problem. also if you have him / her groomed you could ask the person there who deals with you, and notice if this is something that is happening elsewhere.

is he / she a young dog? it may be something that will be grown out of. or you could just try and figure out what has caused it, any recent changes in any routine?

it could be a possession thing, but without knowing sex of dog it is hard to say. if the dog has been possessive over his / her food recently or their bed / area they sleep in then it may be something to do with this.

do a quick search on dog behaviour if it is bothering you, good luck.

No that is not a trait of a Shih Tzu..but accepting a stranger in the house is.... they don't know a stranger. They love everyone. That is why they are so easily stolen... they will go to anyone.

I have never seen a well nature dog as a Shih Tzu and it is very rare or never known them to attack anyone.

I have to add this because I feel you are so wrong..First of all the correct spelling of this breed is Shih Tzu..They are very likely to love up a stranger..I never met a Shih Tzu that hasn't jump all over me and lick me to death. Why yours is like he is I don't know. I have raised Shih Tzu's I have eight of my own and they love everyone.. Matter in fact an 18 year old kid broke into my house with 8 Shih Tzu's and they all welcome him with open paws. He took a lot of things but thank God he didn't hurt my dogs.

I just had to disagree with you about this stranger thing..You are very wrong with that.

It is for mine! It's not that they are "attacking". They want whoever it is to stay and play with them. Once they are in the house, the person seems to become their property and they don't give them up willingly. They are especially frustrated by the mailman and garbage man. Both show up regularly and don't stay to play!
