Is Islam and 'male' religion?

Question

I'm doing an essay about Islam and the question is about whether Islam is a male religion and why/why not. What is your opinion and why? I'm trying to get some more info as I have already searched the Net for some background info.

Before giving my answer, I would like to tell you that you cannot make statements about a religion like that. Many of you posted comments which were very offensive and disrespectful. Please you must understand that muslim people visit this site also. Would you like it if somebody said bad about Christianity. I would really apperciate people think before they say anything.

Now to the answer. Islam is a religion which gives great respect to women. Women are treated as equal. They are given rights in properties. Islam does not say to beat your wife. It says respect your wife even if she is bad to you. Beating is out of the question. Marrying 4 wives has been for a particular reason. Many were widows at that time. Could not look after themselves. There was corruption in those days. Marrying them was a way to give protection. It is also said if you were not having a baby with one, you can get with the other. The rules of wives is that first must be agreed by all. You cant just marry without permission of other wives. You must give them equal rights in property, equal monetary support and equal treatment in terms of love. In the Arab world, there is a lot of wealth. People can afford to have 4 wives. It is not like having 4 wives is mandatory. I come from pakistan which is a muslim country of 160 million. People over there dont have 4 wives. My suggestion to all of you is that you are watching the news and learning about Islam. You dont learn religion by watching CNN or Fox. Religion is studied properly. You have to realize 1 billion people are following Islam. What do you think they are Stupid? Islam is gaining a lot of converts these days. Most of the converts is coming from the Western world. Tell me if it is such a barbaric religion, why did people convert. You have looking at one nation and created a stereotype of Islam. If you are in the West, there is a Muslim minorities. Please take time to visit the Muslims in the Masjids. They are moderate Muslims and will welcome you. They will always be ready to answer your questions. There is not one but several misconceptions about Islam. Everything will be cleared. Please take time to ask those people who converted to Islam. They will tell you the truth. I hope I will be able to get my message across. Respect other peoples beliefs and understand that many things are not what they appear to be. You cannot judge a book by its cover.

Mav wonders, are you asking if Islam is a male dominated, female oppresive religion?
Or are you asking if Islam is an attractive religion for males?

there are very rare, few, interpretation of Islam which are not male oriented (usually in the West). In general it is a religion with little respect to women and their ability to think for themselves.
But I think you get the idea with some examples:
- man can repudate his wife, but not the reverse
- man has custody of the children in muslim countries
- women's fashion is not the most confortable one (burka in Afgahnistan)
- the word of a man is worth twice that of a woman in legal proceedures
Still some Muslims are really working for an interpretation of Islam which goes against all of the above and they have to be encouraged

It is not a "male" religion. In fact, many women find that they have MORE freedoms under Islam than in other religions. Western perception is that women "must" wear full Hijab and veil, when in fact it is the woman's personal choice. It is also true that a man has the right to marry up to four women at the same time, but each wife must approve of the other before the marriage is allowed. If a husband and wife get a divorce, the wife is free to re-marry if she wants, but the husband is not allowed to re-marry until his former wife has another marriage and divorces her second husband.

understand? that is more suitable like preserving the guy's thoughts in route of his spouse and family members... dressing modestly shows in reality ur personality to guage, so if the guy viewing them isn't married, he's then having the threat to %. the proper lady by technique of her personality more suitable, and in no way being pulled in by some ability or yet another by technique of diverse kinds round him... and if he's married, he's then having the threat to view his spouse because the most suitable lady in his eyes, now to not evaluate her with the different kinds he perspectives familiar. adult males are also obliged to gown modestly, they are obliged to furnish an universal look of honor and piety, no tight or luxury silk outfits and no clear outfits too.

what do you mean by Islam is a male religion, it is not Islam gave many rights to women more than 1400 years ago while it was only less than a hundred years ago

Islam IS a male religion, it allows a male to take 4 wives, & to kick them all out by uttering "Talaq, Talaq, Talaq' thrice.Then take the next 4 wives.Females r no better than sheep / camels for Muslims.

There is a miss understanding here
Islam is NOT a male religion
Islam give men more rights than woman BUT its not essintial rights, also there r reasons for that, u get my point ??

- Male can marry 4 women, woman can marry only ONE man, why ?? Becouse when a woman marry 4 men, it will make a disaster if she got pragnant
BUT Muhammed (PBUH) told us to take only ONE woman becouse if a male married 4 women, he must be fair with all of them even in the words, Allah also told us that we will NOT ever be fair with all of them at the same time, so we marry only one

- Male has more rights becouse he is the necessary person (outside the house), working to make his wife's & kids' life better BUT woman is an extremely necessary person (inside the house) more than man, becouse she is the one who is raising the kids, those kids when they grow up, they will be effective persons in the body of socity, so that they must be raised straight & thats the most important function of woman

- Also woman have the right to go out & work (outside home), BUT she must respect & behave herself to make people respect her

- Woman has the right to take money from her husband, BUT husband has NO right to take money from his wife (wife's money) unless she gave him by her own will

- If a big problem happened between a husband & wife that they can't solve by themselves, Allah told us in Qur'an to bring a wise man from the family of the husband & another wise man from the family of the wife to solve the problem

- And many many other rights that women have in Islam

Try to search in Islamic sites about this topic, u will see hundreds of rights for women in Islam

I would hate to be a woman under Islam. The Koran even lays out specific instruction on how to beat your wife. If it is a religion, it's definitely a male-dominated one. It is more accurately described as a "cult".
