i think the "research" you mention may possibly be substituted or switched with "experience"... and it came from many ppl in many walks of life. what Ron Hubbard did was merely put it all together for those who were interested in a similar venue. i personally have no problem with Scientology, as the "product" they push is you! and what can be more important to you than you? my only question is; what does it matter how? if it works for the ppl who use it and they get some kind of positive personal benefit from it, who cares? WHAT's SO for one, is just as easily SO WHAT for another!
and while i'd love to take credit, i can't.. YOUR life IS all about you. Enjoy!

If any research was involved in creating Dianetics, which Scientology was until Hubbard figured out he could avoid taxes and lawsuits calling it a religion, no evidence of empirical and verifiable research has ever been produced, though fabulous claims are always made. In that sense, it is a faith-based system. However, a number of inner circle Scientologists who left after Miscavige took over (Free Zoners) have claimed publicly that the courses and materials were group efforts, not material produced solely by Hubbard. Perhaps some Free Zoner has actually attempted double blind experiments and made them public, but I've seen no evidence of it, and until last year I kept very close tabs on them since they conned someone close to me out of every cent she had and a lot she didn't have.
Try www.clambake.org for lots of neat stuff on the the fraud of Scientology that is not merely other religious zealots crying "cult."

I was under the impression that it was started by author L. Ron Hubbard. Although, I'm not the world's foremost authority on the subject.

It was thought up by Hubbard. And at one point he admitted he did it as a practical joke, just to show that you could do it.

One science-fiction writer's (and a lousy one at that!) fertile mind made it all up our of "whole cloth". There was no "research" done - it is pure science-fiction.
