Kids concentrate on one thing at a time, at least that was my doctor's explanation to why my daughter wasn't walking AND talking by 14 months. She had mastered many fine motor skills and also could identify any animal you could think of. The doctor said because my child was very tall for her age, she was putting a lot of focus into getting around safely. Once she mastered walking, which quickly escalated to running, she began talking very intelligently. Now she'll be 9 in a few weeks and is an advanced math and in the top tier of her 3rd grade class, so, I was worried over nothing.

On the converse side of that, I have a cousin who is autistic and did not walk nor talk until he was 4, he is 14 now. He has always been gifted artistically and in computers, but simple things he seems not to comprehend. Because of this, I was worried about my daughter, thinking she too was autistic or had some other birth defect (I conceived while on birth control pills). I explained this to my doctor who quickly dispelled those worries. I also asked my family and friends who said their doctors gave similar explanations, "kids concentration on one thing."

Have your child checked out by your doctor and if you aren't satisfied with the answer, get a second opinion.

Children start talking at all different ages and there is a wide range of "normal"

For instance my oldest daughter by the time she was 18 months she spoke in complete sentences and could carry on quite the conversation.

When my second daughter was 18 months she could say two word "sentences"

My youngest daughter did not speak a word(not mom dad hi bye nothing) until she was 20 months old....she is now 2 1/2 speaking clearly in sentences. One reason it took her so long to speak was because she had tons of ear infections causing her to not hear properly.

I would say your son is ok and he will say more when he is ready. But you can bring it up with his doctor at his next well child check if you are still concerned about it. They can check his ears for infection and do a hearing test right in the office to rule out any hearing problems.

Good luck!

Its different for all kids, my daughter started talking when she was 9 months old, she is 17 1/2 months now and can say anything, and my friends son is almost 19 months and can only say mom and dad, and my other friends son is 2 1/2 and is just now starting to talk.

it varies from child to child. My son has just turned 2 and has a very limited vocabulary. (he just started really "talking" about a month ago) before that he knew words. Like if you say go get me the ball by the couch he could do it.

My oldest daughter was forming sentence at 9 months. so i was really concerned about my son.

My daughter would talk for my son alot so he didn't need to talk.

I talked to my Dr (because he was over 18 months and didn;t say more than mama and dada). He said he was fine. If your really worried bring it up at your next well baby appointment.

Children do not start talking at the same age. Some before, some later, still if he at this age says mom, dad, more, and things like that you shouldn't worry. At 2 they star building phrases and at 3 they should be more fluent (so someone else other than you would understand him) Don worry yet, stimulate him and don´t do baby talk!

my nephew was two before he started talking...he is three now and won't stop! lol. and he started talking almost right away using full sentences...he would watch people's mouths and make sounds, but not really say words. the first thing he ever said was "NO BATH" as my sister was putting him into the tub. Clear as day.

it all depends on the child...my dad always said that my nephew just didn't have anything to say.

My son is 10 months and sais mama, dada, byby, and baba. So I would say at one he should be atleast saying a few things but every child is different, he will talk when he is ready, dont rush him because once they start they never shut up, lol.

i really don't know when they start to talk...but to stimulate talking...trying making him walk around the house barefoot (safe place of course!)...this stimulates touch in the feet wich somehow makes the child more encouraged to talk.

serious about this...you need this child evaluated by a professional...you are right to be concerned...always trust your instincts, mom...you know he should be more vocal...don't be afraid to find out why he's not...he may have hearing difficulties...throat issues...who knows?
go to a PEDIATRICIAN....you are in my prayers...peace, tammy
