I've known him for years. He has a lot of sex but refuses to wear them, he told me last night. He said his chances (meaning that of a heterosexual male) of getting HIV were less than winning a Powerball lottery. As for the other stuff, he didn't really have an answer. It's his life, so I don't sweat it at all, but what about the powerball thing?

In my roommate's defense, even the CDC has recognized that heterosexual men have the least risk of contracting HIV. That's not to say it doesn't happen. Obviously it does, but I should have included that in my original question.

To be honest, I am quite surprised there are that many girls out there who have been willing to sleep with him without a condom.

What he says is rubbish. It is true that it is thought that a man getting it from a woman is the least likely way of sexually transmitting HIV (although it has not been completely proven). However, recently the incidence of transmission through hetero sex has increased. Certainly the Powerball lottery analogy is completely false, especially since he would be in at risk group (someone who is having a lot of unprotected sex with different partners - I presumed that was what you were suggesting it was not a lot of sex in a monogamous relationship).

And even if he doesn't get HIV, he is increasing his chances of impregnating a girl or caytching another STD. Chlamydia is a very common STD and often asyptomatic but if left untreated could lead to infertility.

1 in every 6 males have hiv and 1 in 4 for women so he has a 85% chance of getting HIV and only a 5% on the powerball so i would stay away from him if i were you!!!

your friend needs to get his facts straight, not only gay people get hiv or aids, also isnt he worried he would get a girl pregnant? so he is wrong about the powerball thing, and in all honesty he could have hiv or aids right now from not using a condom.

I think he is in denial. or truly doesnt know...ignorant of the real chances he could get it.

I'd say his chances of getting it if he don't already have it are pretty good.
HIV Estimate

At the end of 2003, an estimated 1,039,000 to 1,185,000 persons in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS, with 24-27% undiagnosed and unaware of their HIV infection.
CDC has estimated that approximately 40,000 persons in the United States become infected with HIV each year

it is now 2007...how many do you think there is now? pretty scary huh?

Need to splain to him about all the other stds that could kill him or his partner. So many can go years without detection he may never have symptoms and pass them around like a grandmother passes out candy. He is a fool and needs some serious education. Herpes, Syphillis, Gonorrhea all have serious long last consequences, herpes isn't curable what the h*e*l*l* is he thinking. He needs to smarten up and it seems you care enough to be the person to help him, GOOD LUCK!!

Your roommate is dumb, in my opinion. Everyone should use a condom (unless you've both had STD tests). But...it's his life and is he wants to get sick, there's really nothing you can do about it.
Mention this to him....maybe he won't get HIV, but there are a lot of other un-curable std's that he can get from having unprotected sex.

LMAO! Now, I may piss some people off with this question but I'm black so I'm allowed to ask it... Is your room mate a brotha? LOL!
Because, I knew many brothas back in the day, who refused to wear condomes, most of them got like 4 and 5 babies wondering why they can't afford sh!t.

your roomate is an idiot and his facts are twisted. more heterosexuals contract hiv ever year than homosexuals. hiv is not the only sti out there thats not cureable, herpes, hepatitis....
and more people get hiv than they win any lottery (i know people who have hiv who have never won the lottery).

Your roommate will learn on his own what he is doing. You just worry about yourself and let him do what he wants. The powerball thing is just an expression....lol
