Ah, but see statistics, like most books of scripture (well, most books, but that weakens my point, so let it stand), can be manipulated to say anything you want. Whatever your source, the number you are quoting is only _reported_ atheists...

Probably because Atheists feel that they are discriminated against because the majority of everything surrounds "Christian" beliefs and they feel that they need to speak out on Answers because there is very little way to speak out otherwise.
For instance I have had a few questions about Jesus's tomb being found and what it would do with Christianity, and it is amazing how Christians AND the Atheists DON'T want it to be so...they try to make every excuse under the sun that it isn't. I wonder why?

Although unscientific as the representation is here, I think what it means is there are a lot more closet atheists in America than anyone ever imagined. They can't speak their minds in public for fear of losing their jobs or their lives, but they can anonymously on the Internet

religious people regardless of their faith (with the exception of Jehovahs witnesses maybe) overall do not feel a need to justify their faith in a higher power.
i am not religious but spiritual instead-there is a new growth in this as well. I dont prescribe to the theory of one religion being better than another. I believe that GOD exist and that my life is better for that!
I am american but i dont claim to represent all americans-this is just my opinion which i am entitled to
i hope this helps

In Europe the opposite is true and the overwhelming majority are atheists so that balances it out.

Your % is a little bit low.
Other than that I don't know. For me it is like logging on to watch a train wreck.
