My friend is interested in an all over caramel/medium-light brown color. Last time she got highlights, the hair was pulled out too thick and now she is pretty much a bleached blonde, except for her dark brown roots which are about 2 inches now. She wants an all over color and in a few months, redo the highlights. Is this possible and what should she use? She doesn't want to go to a salon.

Yes, and it depends on if she has a red tint or ash tint to her hair. I would suggest going to a salon and purchase a color and ask them to look at your hair to determine the color you will need.
If you have a red base to your hair and put a red based color on it you will get alot of red. Color can be very tricky...

Sounds like she had a bad experience at that salon! Doesn't mean every time will be the same, so she should take that into consideration. She may have had someone do it that was fresh out of school, or was just not paying any attention to what they were doing! But if she is wanting to keep her highlights the easiest and less costly thing to do would be to just put low lights in throughout the blonde, paying attention to where there is more blonde and less natural. Talk to your stylist and have a good consultation. Believe me if you go on and on about how the last stylist screwed up your hair, the new one will do everything she can to fix it the way you want it and get your business every 6 to 8 wks. But if you are adamant about doing it at home, I suggest using Clairol color! This is the best store line and used in some salons. She also needs to use some great color shampoos and conditioners, if you buy over the counter, use Nexus. This was a salon product that is now LEGALLY sold in stores. As far as the highlights go, if you do them at home, pull through a cap (no matter what the hair length is), make sure to get down to the roots, pulling every other hole. As you pull the hair through make sure that you aren't pulling out half your hair. You want thin pieces but ones that you will definitely see. As long as you are using a good shampoo and conditioner and deep condition at least once a month there is no problem with doing one right after another. Have fun and hope it turns out good for you.

First I want to stress that the highlighting, then coloring , then highlighting again is going to cause serious damage. I suggest waiting 6 months and several cuts before the next highlight.

She will need to use a permanent coloring and will probably need to do it more than once in a 3 week period. This is of course depending on how well her hair takes to the first coloring. Keep in mind that chances are she will get highlights on their own due to coloring over highlights and the fact that all of her hair is not highlighted. So if she is looking for one all over color this won't happen for a few colorings.
My suggestion would be a color by Clairol Nice and Easy or Revlon colorist probably #60. Colorist has a fade resistant gel so this will help keep her highlights from coming through.

Yes. Try using a non ammonia dye, Revlon Color Silk is great and cheap, matching one level lighter than her roots. Don't leave on the full time but more like 15 to 20 minutes or it will take too dark. Let the hair "rest" a few days before re highlighting.

there's a sparkling dye which removes the colour youve basically utilized, and gets it back on your organic shade which it replaced into in the previous. Ive used it and it has consistently worked rather properly. Its the colour B4... you are able to purchase it at some different shops different than boots. take a glance around. :)
