My lhasa apso lived till 18. Trust me its the anal glands. Get a vet to do it. Its very sensitive and it smells horrible. Dont do it yourself they know how to do it. That is an area where it can easily be infected. Dont do it yourself. Yes it needs to be cleaned out. Some groomers do it for you. But most wont. Most dogs feel humiliated by this. Wouldnt you? Anyways a vet is there for these reasons.

It's actually a sac of fluid near their rectum. All dogs (not just lhasa apsos) have them. Most dogs expel them on their own when they poop, but if they have soft stool or if the anal sacs are infected, they may not be able to express on their own. You will need a vet or a veterinary nurse to express them for you. Sometimes a groomer can do this for you as well, however, if they are infected it is best if a vet does it so they can see if they are infected & whether or not your dog needs antibiotics.

If they get full and need to be expressed, the usual signs are dragging/scooting hind end, and biting/chewing at their hind end.

These are the anal glands, one each side of the rectum.
Dogs do not need these emptying routinely, but some dogs do have a problem when they get blocked. The symptoms of this are frequent licking of that area, scooting across the floor and - if they get infected- an appalling smell! If your dog has no symptons, leave well alone. If he does need them emptying, take him to the vet the first time & ask him/her to show you how to do it.

If your dog's anal glands are NOT causing a problem, I say leave them alone.

If you're having him professionally groomed then it's likely that your groomer is doing it as part of the package (you can ask them).

If his glands DO need to be expressed, have the vet or groomer show you how, it is very easy. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T LOOK OR HAVE YOUR FACE OR HAIR IN THE WAY....nothing worse than anal gland "juice" in your face/hair...trust me on this......I do it while they're in the bathtub just before I wash them, easiest to clean up this way.

Hi, this is true of all dogs. They have 2 glands called anal glands which fill up and need emptying on a regular basis. This is a job for a vet really, or you could get advice from a vet as to how to correctly empty them. Most vet practices charge very little for doing this procedure. It is a BAD idea for you to attempt to di it before knowing how to do it properly. You'll most likely need someone to restrain him if you are to do it yourself!

It sounds like you are talking about the dog’s anal glands. It may be best for your vet to show you how to express the anal glands so as to ensure that you carry out this procedure correctly. There are many good websites which offer advise on everything you need to know about anal glands, one of which is :-

Best to let a groomer or vet do it. I actually had the ones on my English Bulldog removed, much easier and less smelly! Your vet can advise you further
