Many things about the Antichrist's reign will imitate God's life and death. Remember the part where it speaks about the False Prophet receiving an apparently fatal head wound, then miraculously recovering? Jesus was crucified and rose after three days, so the Antichrist would have to IMITATE that event to make him seem more like the God everyone has been searching for!

666 was Nero. Jesus was warning the Christians of the persecution that was to come.

When Nero Caesar's name is transliterated into Hebrew, which a first-century Jew would probably have done, he would have gotten Neron Kesar or simply nrwn qsr, since Hebrew has no letters to represent vowels. “It has been documented by archaeological finds that a first century Hebrew spelling of Nero's name provides us with precisely the value of 666. whiile the old testament measures the weight of King david or solomon in gold at 6 6 6.

in Ezra it says: The children of Adonikam, six hundred sixty and six.

so while the english version link King solomon to the evil number of 666, the new translators link emporer Nero to 616.
but then again others say that the pope has a number on his crown and its 666.

This number appears in the Book of Revelations which is, perhaps, the most anti-Jewish book in the New Testament. '666' is a reference to Jews and the Jewish God. How? In several places in the OT, God is referred to as 'Our Righteousness' or Tzidkosaynu in Hebrew. One of the methods used to understand hidden meanings within the Hebrew Scriptures is the system of gematria, assigning numerical values to letters of the hebrew alphabet. When the word 'tzidkosaynu' is spelled out fully, ie all optional letters are present, the gematria is 666.

Therefore, the author of Revelations was hinting that for christianity to succeed, Judaism must be viewed as evil and be eliminated. Unfortunately, over the centuries, too many christians understood this message and took it upon themselves to fulfill it.

These were all the roman number definitions in use at that time. It is not much of a stretch to say that the mark of the beast is money, as this was the primary use of numbers at that time.
