You wear a gown with a cap, called a mortarboard, for all graduations. These can be any color. When you graduate with your masters, you get a hood. The color of the hood reflects your course of study. When you graduate with your doctorate, you receive a new gown and cap (I don't know what they are called) that are both ornamented with the color of your course of study. You wear the hood with the new cap and gown as well.
