I have always wondered what it would be like to the a World leading authority in something. Or to be the best at something. Perhaps we all have it in us to be this, but haven't quite found the potential. How does one find it in themselves to be THE BEST at one particular thing? Is it to get up and keep trying, or is it a God given gift that someone is blessed with at birth?

Your goal: To be the "best" at something, or the "best you can be" at something? There's a big difference.
You might be gifted in a certain thing, -- let's use music for an example. Before you become a follower of Christ, your music is a "talent". It is only when you turn your life over to Christ, does your music become a "gift".
So, you have the gift of music, given to you by God. What do you think God has intended, giving you that gift? It is for His glory.
Any gift you have, if you put God first, acknowledge that your gift would be a mere talent without HIm, and know that it is because of Him you have this gift, you will be the best.
Strive to be the best in God's eyes, not man's. You will be blessed beyond belief.

We are all gifted in one way or another. First we must look at our inner being, our soul, spirit, to master in knowing who we are from the inside out. To be the best person that God knows that we can be, and then we may seek or know what it is that we are gifted at doing.

To be a or the best always needs some training.
Train yourself to do something with your hands, my grandmother said a trade has a golden floor.
Learn to understand God by reading His Word the Bible.
Do everything like you would do it for God..
At last you need also to decide in what you would like to be THE BEST?

The best on what scale? Because no matter what the best is only judged within your own social group, or those you make contact with while in context.

You were created for a specific purpose. You are the only one who can fulfill that purpose the best. If you don't fulfill your purpose, someone else will, but it won't be the best.
