MiniDV and Digital8 record on tapes, DVD obviously records on a DVD. Tape camcorders usually record better wuality video than DVD camcorders, because they don't compress the video as much. Depending on what you want to do with the video you capture, then one or the other would be better. If you plan to do some editing, definitely go for a MiniDV camcorder, since you will be able to get higher quality video which will look better in larger display screens. If you want something convenient, where you don't need a lot of editing and want to go quickly from camcorder to TV, go for the DVD, since you can just pop the disc in your regular DVD player and watch the footage as you captured it.
Personally, I prefer MiniDV, but that's because I like editing my videos. Panasonic and Canon would probably be my best bets for a camcorder. The Canon Elura 100 is an excellent choice for MiniDV, and you can find one for under $300!!!

MiniDV and Digital8 record onto tape, whereas DVD camcorfers record onto 8cm DVDs, given the choice I'd go for the DVD Camcorder, but they will be more expensive.

Here's a good explanation of the different types of camcorders:

The best type to buy would depend on you - if you plan to do lots of editing, miniDV is the best choice, but if you only want to view & share the videos straight from the camcorder, then a DVD camcorder may be more suitable.
