Depends on the cat. I have 4. 3 prefer to have a good rub down but all of them love to be scratched to some extent. Fat Phoose will roll over to have his tummy gently scratched but Kali is definetly a massage lover.

It depends upon the cat, they all have unique personalities and preferences.

I have a cat that likes her head massaged and body scratched, the other way around and she will get upset.

I have three cats and two of them like to be scratched more. I think they like a combo of scratching and massaging actually. Start with their cheaks with your fingernails and work your way down to the backside with your fingernails. Most but not all cats love it! One of my cats loves being swept with the broom! LOL But not the other. She really LOVES it! It's her catnip! LOL But the other two give me this look as if to say "Don't EVEN try that with ME" So it really al depends on the cat and it's personality that determines this. Most cats don't like to be pet near their bottom half however and really, who can blame them? LOL

Massages to the neck and scratches on the chin. I've never met a kitty who didn't like both!
