WMV files will not play either streamed in a browser or downloaded on my CP using Windows Media Player.....?

Question

I am using Vista Home Premium w/ Windows Media Player 11 (which you can not uninstall on Vista) and I can no longer play .wmv files that are being streamed on the internet. Even if I have them downloaded on to my computer I still cant play them using Windows Media Player. However, i can play the downloaded ones using Divx Player. I had no problems up until a week ago and I am not sure what happened to cause this. It appears I have all my codecs and I am pretty sure I havent done anything to cause this to happen. Any ideas?

To Rajure - I can open them if i am able to download a .smv file using Divx Player. I care more about finding out why I cant play them using the windows media player which SHOULD play them. Not to mention .wmv files that are streamed on the net usually use Windows Media player to play them which I can not.

Okay: you may not be aware of this, but Windows Media Player 11 has *strengthened* DRM (Digital Rights Management) "support". In short, DRM is an encryption-based technology that allows the provider of audio/video content to (I love the following word [long story]) *interpolate* certain restrictions and attributes of a file's properties, such as how long a user can play the file, whether or not the file can be burned on a disk (even a data disk)...even *report back to the provider how many times (and at what times) you've played the content back*.

If the provider has chose this: I'm not saying providers are all that intrusive.

This is my suspicion.

If you had left it at having problems playing back *streaming* media, I would have deduced your issue was probably based on some needed adjustment of networking protocol settings in WMP (or have you recently installed any firewall, antivirus software or are you connecting to the internet via a router? Either of which might have "put a squeeze" on your ports and might be restricting access and therefore causing the problem), but you've included "Even if I have them downloaded on to my computer I still cant play them using Windows Media Player". However... in terms of streaming content, you can download the "url link" of streaming content (i.e. an .asx) that only appears to be a standalone file; downloading such files won't help you stream the same content, as they only provide a 'guide' to prompt WMP access the online server.

And, you do write ".wmv", not ".asx", so that knocks that option out.

UNLESS... you're merely *assuming* these files are .wmv because... both .wmv and .asx will likely display with *the same file icon* because they are Both associated with WMP!
