As long as you wear your retainer as directed they shouldn't shift; they won't have the chance to. If you do however neglect to wear your retainer more than likely they will shift. My sister didn't follow directions after she had her braces removed when she was a teenager and now she needs braces again as an adult (27). Just follow directions.

I had braces in my late teens early twenties and my teeth were really bad, I'm in my early thirties and everything seems fine. I do have a permanent retainer that is bonded to the back of my lower teeth and that keeps them from moving but other than that I don't even wear my retainer anymore and my top teeth look great. Definitely go for it you will be happy that you did, the first time they come off and you see your perfect smile will be great!!!

You should definately follow the advice that the orthodontist gives you, teeth can always move back to their original position, believe me I have seen it first hand in adults who did not comply with the instructions given to them. You are paying alot of money so it is obviously very important to you, the last thing you want is to look back and think why didn't I just do as I was told? Good luck with your braces the results are amazing.

I wore my retainer the first time I got braces for 4 years. I quit wearing it and my wisdom teeth came in, or tried to anyway. Then my teeth got crooked again and I had jaw problems. Now I have braces on for the second time and have had to have them twice as long as the first. You'd better believe that I am wearing my retainer this time!

I'm an adult who has successfully worn braces. Don't fret! In this day and age, people who make a lot of money by fixing our faults, take extra special care when performing thier expensive services on us. As far as the retainer, I don't wear mine any more and I used to box Golden Gloves. Just make sure you wear it for at least 3 months. Your teeth will be fine. Good luck.

I can only speak for my kids. They had the braces, wore the retainer for 6 months full-time, then just at night for 6 months.
At that point my son threw his retainer away, and his teeth have moved a bit. They still look OK though.
My daughter is still wearing her retainer at night, and another 6 months on her teeth are still perfect.

I had braces as a kid and I didn't wear my retainer as instructed (don't ask me where it is now). My teeth aren't perfectly straight and they aren't as straight as they were when I got the braces off but they didn't go back to their orginal position.
The worst of the crookedness never returned. My front 2 teeth used to be like this: ^ (slightly wider more like a gabled roof top). But they remained straight.
Go for it and get the braces. Good Luck.

I had a retainer for ages and it made my teeth perfectly straight, I have found though that they have moved a little, but it is barely perceptible, and thus i think the treatment is definitely worth it.

I didn't bother wearinf the retainer, and a couple moved a little bit, but nothing much to worry about considering what a pain the retainer was.

i had them for a while, and when i got them off they gave me a retainer too. you'll be fine if you dont wear it, your teeth def WILL NOT go back t the way they were before unless you do something to horribly mess up your mouth. if they give you the reatainer though, atleast wear it at night every now and again.
