As opposed to what some other people have answered, i would not reccomend going to a "Box Store" without knowing what you want. They may happen to give you something that is totally wrong for your situation. The type of home theater system you would need depends on what features you feel you need as well as your budget.
There are many options in which you can choose from: Built in DVD players, All in one box systems, high end amplifiers/speakers.
You first should sit down and figure out what you want, what size room you have, where you want your speaker locations to be, ect. THEN, research on CNET.com and look at customer reviews for different models to get an idea of what you are looking for.
Then, if you have an idea of what you want, go to a "box store" and price shop.
This is the best advice i can give on this subject.

If you've been in the market for a year ... you've now spent a year NOT enjoying a home theater!
You'll quickly find there is never the "perfect" system that everyone says is the "best". All you can do is get the best for you ... based on your needs and budget. Then just jump in and start enjoying it!
For some guidance as to what's better options out there - check out the AVS Forum. Some of the biggest names in the industry hang out here. They'll get you on the right track.

Trying to avoid buyers remorse is tough.
Go to CNET for home theater reviews. The Editor reviews are provided, right next to consumer rviews. You can sort by price, manufacturer, etc.
Your budget makes all the difference in this. Don't over research it.
I would buy a system you can build on, i.e. not a Home Theater in a Box. I would buy a mid-range receiver, and some quality surround sound speakers.
I bought a system from Aperion Audio. If I had found them first, I probably could have saved myself a lot of trouble. They do a 30-day home trial, 100% refundable. Their techs are very helpful. I pestered one of their guys for over two hours, and they walked me through everything I needed. It's Internet direct, and tax free with free shipping.
They give you the most for your money I felt... after listening to dozens of systems.

It depends on your budget. There is alot of hype out there. I suggest you go to www.crutchfield.com and check out what they have to say about home theater. I trust them more than any store. For probably 90% of people out there, a good home-theater-in-a-box (HTIB) system from Onkyo, for less than $1000, will be fantastic.

well it seems that if you have been looking for a year maybe you dont really need one..they all pretty much do the same thing so go to best buy or somewhere and ask them what their best seller is and just buy it..your making it harder than it is to buy one...
