It puts context to the NT. If you are not aware, Jesus confirms parts of the OT in his teachings also. The OT is relevent as prophesy to show certain facts also.

All scripture is written to one of three people.
1. Jew
2. Gentile
3. Church

All scripture has three applications.
1. Doctrinal
2. Historical
3. Inspirational.

When you read a verse determine who it was written to. James 1:1. Then you can determine the doctrinal application. It happened at a point in time, Historical. It also has the inspirational aspect. What does it mean to me today and my life.

The new is not a command to ignore the old. It is a fulfillment of the old. Romans 8 says you cant be saved by the law, but the only way to be saved is by the law. Romans 8:2-4. Figure that one out!

Reading the scriptures, we find that the Old Testament is "for our learning". This means it acts as a Historical Document of our past dealings with GOD. I do not know why some so-called preachers use it as much as they do but it is certainly a great reference for Historical Background. For instance How GOD treated Homosexuals can be seen there to use as further evidence that HE Never accepted them. Why are you so hung up on the Old Testament questions today?? Have a great weekend.

The Mosaic Laws were abolished, but the OT is not meant to be ignored. Infact, Proverbs is a great book, and there are several others that are great. Many (of the books) are prophecies, and since not all of them (the prophecies, not the books) have been completed yet (some have been completed already), it is a good idea to have knowledge of the prophecies.

Where did you get your info?
The New Covenant has nothing to do with ignoring the Old, and no Christians believe that the Old Testament is invalid. Christians have a series of traditional religious paradigms, and they interpret the Old Testament within the context of one or more of those paradigms.

The New Testament does not abolish the Old. The Kingdom of God, according to the Gospels (New Testament) is available by turning away from violence and accepting the Kingdom.

Rom 8:3,4 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. According to this scripture Jesus came to fulfil the law that seeks to establish our own righteousness by our own obedience to the law. This is made clear in Rom 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. If we are led by the Spirit we are not under the law (see Gal 5:18). This means that if we walk in the flesh we are subject to the law again. This is confirm by Gal 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse, for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.” We do the works of the law in our flesh therefore we subject ourselves to judgement of the law. We have become estranged from Christ, we who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace (Gal 5:4). We fall from grace when we do the works of the law, like trying to obtain justification by our own obedience to the law. Grace and law are mutually exclusive, if we are under grace we are not under the law (Rom 6:14). The Old Covenant still applies to us if we fall from grace by walking in the flesh rather than walking in the Spirit.

We are never suppose to ignore the OT. Jesus himself said that he was not here to change his father's words. The OT is as valid today as it was 3000 years ago.

Jesus didn't abolish the law, but fulfilled it.
