Ok, we have all seen the "homeless" collecting money at offramp intersections. And I'm sure some have given them a dollar. But what would you do if someone was holding a sign that said--"will take your empty pop can or water bottle? Help me keep ----- looking nice."

Just curious because believe it or not I have considered doing just that.

To respond to wiplash and clarify...

I don't need to collect cans but I do see a need to promote recycling and what better way to do this than to stand on a corner collecting cans from motorists as they wait for a green light. Besides everyone can use a couple extra bucks and if I did sell the cans for cash it would be kinda like working for the day wouldn't it? Besides I am a Stay at home father so it would be a great way to get away from the kids for a day and a way to be outside. (though breathing exhaust all day isn't exactly my idea of a good time)

It isn't much but let's face it money is money no matter where it comes from. And any one standing on a corner asking for money really doesn't have much of a right to get upset if some one gives them cans instead of money.

I guess you could say that they will then have to work to cash it in, rather than just standing there waiting for some one to just hand it to them.

Wow, I've never had any body ever just hand me money for doing nothing but stand there, no they couldn't complain. After all if your giving them some thing of value it's money they can use.

But as I said then they would have to do a little work to get the money from taking it to the recycle place. Maybe I should do that with my bottles and cans, what a good idea!!

Thanks for the idea! : )

I have given people on the street recyclables before; its just another type of currency to them.
As for someone having access to the internet and being homeless (a few floors up from here asked about this), haven't you heard of public libraries? These places allow access to the internet, and they have these things called "books" that you can borrow, take home and read!!

can collecting can be very lucrative. actually, panhandling in general can net you a large salary. just imagine if you collect $1 from only 200 people in a given day. $1,400 per week. That's a decent sized salary depending on where you live.

can collecting should supplement you well.

I would give you my cans .. although I don't understand how someone with access to the internet would need to go round collecting cans.
