You should try to match the style to the environment of where the wedding will take place as well as the reception.

Black-Tie: tuxedos and ball gowns (or very similar)
Formal: nice suits or a tux and a gown (like prom)
Semi-Formal: suits or nice dress pants and gowns
Casual: khakis and dresses (seasonal dresses)

You could put the dress code on the reception cards that go into the invitation. Or on the invitation itself.
Like: "Black-tie reception to immediately follow ceremony" or on the reception card have a place for dress code at the top that announces the dress code so no one will be confused.

Hope this helped and hope all goes well! ♥

Dress is never mentioned on the wedding invitation, unless it is black tie. Typically, the recipient of the invitation would know how to dress by the formality of the wedding invitation, the location and time of day.

it depends on the type of wedding you are having. usually late afternoon or evening weddings are black tie. if you are getting married earlier in the day or are having more of a casual wedding then it would be casual, but no jeans or t-shirts. most people know how to dress for a wedding.
