My son killed my dog with chocolate and I am looking for ideas on punishing him. Looking for something he will never forget. I told Him 2-3 times to never give the dog anything but dog food. Suggestions?
p.s. Don't post here if you are bashing me only ideas

Get him a new parent. You're abusive, you believe in physical punishment that's considered illegal. I hope you burn in hell.

How old is your son? Does he understand death? Does he not know that because of him your dog and his dog will no longer be with you? Don't you think this is punishment enough? Your son will have to live with the guilt for the rest of his life that he was responsible for the death of a beloved pet. Lighten up. I know you are hurting over your lose. But, your son is too and carrying the guilt of this lose on his shoulders. Most of this depends on your sons age. I am assuming he is a young child who has not learned responsibility yet. This is not a bashing. Just a fact you may have not considered.

At 10, I would consider him old enough to do a little research.. His punishment could be doing a research project on the affects of chocolate on dogs, and then give you a report (suitable length for a ten year old). Or research what is toxic for dogs... the ideas could be numerous, and he would learn from the research as well as from loosing the dog from his own actions.

Did he feed the dog chocolate with full knowledge that it could kill him? Did he realize how bad chocolate is for dogs before giving it to him? Was it an accident? i.e: did your son leave the chocolate lying around?

Let me tell you something. I was a grownup before I knew chocolate was bad for dogs. A puppy got into a box of chocolate from someone who worked at a chocolate factory and got free samples. He didn't get sick or die. I sure panicked though for about 12 hours, called the vet etc. Thank God that poor little pupy didn't even get sick.

Don't forget dogs have very keen smelling senses. The smell of chocolate in a room could have driven that dog crazy and made the dog snatch it away.

Acknowledge that he may also be grieving. Allow the grief period to pass and then perhaps he can volunteer in an animal shelter for two weeks or so, so he can increase his knowledge on how to properly care for animals.

Well he killed a beautiful loving animal from his stupidity and willfulness. Just because the dog may have wanted the chocolate ...would he give a child a loaded gun too just because he wanted to play with it? The boy is immature and obviously stubborn who does not listen. Kids are like that. The loss of the dog, your anger and grieving should send a message...watch him closely. He may or may not show remorse...hopefully he does. He bears watching, take nothing for granted else he'll find himself in more trouble. The kid has got to be made to THINK. He hasn't done that yet and that is his problem. Lots of people have that problem and they are not all kids. It's a pretty common phenomenon now a days.
My sympathies over the loss of your dog. Punishment is not the answer here...education and maturity are lacking and he needs improvement in that department.

How old is he?
Sounds like he's either fairly young, or terribly out of control.
Did he actually SEE what it did to the dog? Did he see the dog in its convulsions? Did he see the dog's uncontrollable diarrhea and vomiting?
Take away ALL his privileges and don't get him another dog, make him help at an animal shelter for a couple weeks.
If he's killing dogs now.... Well, remember ALL serial killers started out on pets.
*added after asker added his age*
Ten is PLENTY old enough to understand not to do something when they are told not to. Make him volunteer at an animal shelter. He killed that dog, and he needs to be punished for it.
Ten is old enough to know better.

I would imagine that knowing he has killed a dog is punishment enough. I think you need to talk to him and assess how sorry he is. If he is sorry then you should explain to him what his actions have resulted in and that it must never happen again. Then I would ground him for a week with only a small amount of time playing allowed so he really has time to think about what he has done.
If he shows no remorse (and judge this carefully, don't let your anger cloud your judgement) then you need to speak to a counsellor to find out how to deal with this. It is not a normal thing to do.
I know you're upset and angry but you must not act cruel towards your son. Kids make silly mistakes.
Please consider the welfare of your son before you act on this.
I am sorry that you have lost your dog.

first of all it depends on how old your son is and i am sure it wasnt intentional so he probably feels bad and i am sure will never forget it anyway...alot of people dont believe the myth on chocolate and dogs i always tell my kids never to feed them chocolate also for future reference grapes and raisens can kill a dog too...some dogs can handle these and others cant it depends on the size of the dog and the amount of chocolate...i would go easy on your son as he is probably feeling bad enough now if it was deliberate then yur son like it or not needs professional help...

And the child was not attached to the dog? Death did nothing?
Don't allow the child access to ANYTHING food or drink related.
Move everythign into high, locked cabinets.
Never let the child get his own snacks, etc.
You have to find the punishment that fits the crime, and makes logical sense.
Having to ask for everything will make sense to him,
as well as remind him often,
as well as keep your rage lower,
as well as keep the gov't off your back for cruel and unusual, you get it?

How old is he?
may be no allowance for a month, no telephone, erase his memory cards for playstation, make him do chores.

But just knowing he kill the dog should be enough.
