they say it's 7 hours don't they?? Doesn't that depend on the person? I find it's best to get up soon as you wake up, even if it's only 5 hours sleep, I use to back to sleep if I dont think i've had enough hours but then I'd feel loads more tired & that'll prob last through the day...why is that? is under 7 hours sleep unhealthy?

Yes, it all depends on the person. Some people thrive on solely six hours of sleep with a nap during the day. Researcher say it is good to have a solid sleep pattern- go to bed the same time and wake up the same time each day. THat way its like training your body to sleep when it is told to. This also prevents that dreaded grogginess in the morning! Try it if you can.

I did that for years I was a Bartender that work 10am-3am 6 days a week and that one day off... I had College! It finally cought up with me... I wore my body down to far and ended up having anxiety attacks and stayed in the hospitol! Not fun! If your body doesnt have time to "Re Boot" itself... it will finnally kick your butt! It all depends on the "Quality of sleep" also. I got to the point where I couldnt sleep without haveing a few drinks... I was wired from work I guess~ I think a human body physically needs 2 hrs to live, but not function. Im 25 now and I go to bed at 10pm (I know old lady) and wake up at 6:30 take the dogs out and cuddle with them till 7:00. I am not a wired as I used to be, but My back doesnt hurt! haha

There are a tremendous number of variables starting with the age of the person...
Little children sleep 12-15 hours.
The elderly sleep much less...

There are studies that now say that seven is a good number and eight is too much, but that depends on each indiviudal, their health, physcial and mental condtion.

There are also four levels of sleep, from drowsiness, and REM to deep sleep.

It's healthy. UCLA Med School did a sleep study and found that people who sleep 6 hrs vs 8 hrs live longer. That's great you can do well on 5 hrs. I plan to reduce my sleep need to 4 hrs per night by staying up a night or two every week once I get done with some work I must do.

For teenagers and adults 8 hours is the exact "perfect" time. A lot less or more is unhealthy.
However, its not just important how long you sleep, but also that you go to bed about the same time every evening(with a few exceptions)and don't eat or drink too much in the evening. Usually people with more mental pressure in their life will need more than others.
