Is there a way to deal with shin splints caused by running besides stopping running? I'm preparing for a race after a period of no running and am starting to get shin splints. Time constraints prohibit me from not training.

From what I understand, shin spilnts are actually an overload of the muscle in front of your shinbone as well as the fibres that connect that muscle to the bone. Here are some things that help me:

1- Run backwards. This always helped me when I ran track. My team would warm up by running two laps. After the two laps were over, I would run an extra half lap (200 yards) or sometimes 300 yards backwards. It helps strengthen the muscles and flush out the icky-ness. {it works in the same way as reverse sit-ups do for your tummy}.
2- Rest and ice. Immediately after you get home and shower, put your legs up and put some ice on those bad boys. Ice alleviates the pain. You might need to take a day off from exercising too. I know you don't want to, but if you're going to feel better, you must listen to your body when it tells you to stop.
3- If all else fails, try some new shoes. Old running shoes can be worn out in all the wrong places. They could attribute to your problems. You might also want to consider arch supports if you have a low arch or flat feet.
Good luck with your race!

Rest and Ice, also proper stretching before AND after, I have been running on andoff for 11 years and can tell you its more often from going too far too fast than anything else.
