Forgive me for pointing out the obvious, but doesn't that typically land people in the hospital?

One of those quotes that doesn't mean anything. That quote is really dumb, who would step onto a staircase when they don't even know if it is complete? That sounds more like stupidity to me - yeah, exactly like faith actually!
Oh, and Martin Luther King Jr? I didn't even know that Martin Luther King had a son named after him.

I think he's assuming that you know those particular steps or someone has reported to you concerning exactly where those steps are.
A blilnd man will tell you not to just go a'steppin' down an unfamiliar flight of steps.
It's a flawed analogy without a preface.

A Mark Twain quote.
There are those who scoff at the school boy, calling him frivolous and shallow. Yet it was the school boy who said, Faith is believing what you know ain't so.

That strikes me as more a leap of faith. Especially in an Earthquake.
Faith is knowing the correct way.

kind of elementary, but i suppose since dr. king said it, it should hold some value. i have always thought of faith as a more controversial subject, though best summed up in a line from one of my favorite movies, "some things are real whether you believe in them or not." that's the core of faith in my opinion. hope this helped!!

I would say consider the source. Only very foolish people can not see the value of such a man and his teachings.

King probably saw the staircase as going up.
I see the staircase as going down.

I agree.
Look at Abram, later Abraham.
God told him to pack up his things and follow Him. He did not tell him where they were going. Abram had no clue, but he was faithful and followed God where He wanted to take him.

You have to put sayings in the context from which they arose.
