Well, in Malayalam "kadala" refers to chickpeas, often in a spicy curry.

Tamil, I think you might be right that it refers to love. There is a Carnatic song that starts out with "Karunai kadalai" and I'm guessing that means "Compassionate and loving."

With this spelling I only know of Kadala curry, and Indian spice. The other answer is probably the one you're looking for spelling the word with no a at the end.
