IT IS NOT INFECTED.
How many professionals jsut decided your wife had a serious infection including staph from not knowing any better??????
Didnt think there were any. It soudns more like shes put too much of whatever aftercare you were using on it. Stop any and all aftercare besides washign it in the shower everyday. The oozy bit is where you've overmoisturised the scab and its having trouble healing. The pain and swelling is just cos its on her leg. Elevate the leg and let the blood run back to it after a few minutes and you'll see what i mean. The blood flowing to that part of the body constantly means the nerves are constantly active, same as with the foot area. Take an ibruprofen for the pain, let her put her leg up and if it hasnt healed within a coupleof days go back to the artist.
An INFECTION (for all you doctors above) Shows as a purple red area baout 2 inches OUTSIDE the tattoo. Its going to hurt a lot and it wont just be oozy it will be puss-y. All that is going to be within a day or two so i think you're past the infection from getting tattooed. Now wether or not she got soemthing on it afterwards by accident (cat rubbed on it maybe etc etc) is not the artists fault.
An ALLERGY shows up as an itchy red rash ONLY on the colour the person is allergic to. that colour will scab up real bad and the colour will probably get pushed out by the body leaving a blank space.

It take about 7-14 days for a new tattoo to heal completely. If you have applied a antibacterial ointment to it about 4 times a day. Some places tell you to apply a non perfume lotion but don't do that it cause infection by clogging the pours. It sounds like she has an infection if it is oozing. I would start using neosporin or something like that washing it with a mild soap first gently then apply a thin coat of the ointment for a few day and nothing else on it but that. Don't cover it up either it needs to breath. If it doesn't start clearing up after a few days of doing this go to the doctor she might need antibiotics for a very serious infection. And what ever she does DO NOT SCRATCH IT! It will ruin the tattoo by pulling of the color. I have 5 tattoo's and never had a problem healing. I just put the antibiotic ointment on it for 14 days 3 to 4 times a day and they all turned out fine. Good Luck and be careful because it can turn into a serious blood infection. I third Deb P's commentary (but she has all the legitimacy needed without my thumbs up). If you wish it doesn't hurt to drop a line to the artist, but it really does sound like you're overdoing the washing, moisturizing or both. If there really is a health issue (very unlikely), the artist will recognize it and direct you to a doctor.
I overdid the moisturizing on my first tat and had an awful rash for a number of days plus it was way sensitive, this about the same time after as your wife's. I laid off for a couple of days, giving it lots of air, and only put more (and a very small amount of) moisturizer on after the skin had chilled to normal. I was fine after that.

When I got my tattoo, it took me two weeks to heal. Your wife probably has an infection, and needs to go to the doctor. Has she been using a scented soap or lotion over it? If so, she needs to stop using those products, and go get an unscented soap/lotion. I personally used Aveeno advanced therapy lotion after the first week. Until you can get to the doctor, go to any tattoo parlor and buy a tin of Tattoo Goo. It's a natural product that promotes healing. Never use triple antibiotic, vaseline or anything with petroleum products in it. It prevents the skin from healing, which would also cause an infection.

Run (or limp) to an emergency room. It's possible she has developed cellulitis, which is very serious and can cause loss of a limb or worse. Don't wait!! You must be very diligent about tattoo aftercare. I have 3 and never experienced any kind of problem because I followed my aftercare instructions to the letter. It's probably too late for an over the counter antibiotic ointment. See a doctor ASAP.

listen to Deb P. shes' a tattoo artist.....stop cleaning the tattoo so much! the most it should be cleaned is 2 times a day.....if that. 1 time in the morning and 1 time before bed. call the tattoo parlor to double check. i think deb p said it takes about 7-14 days to heal and you said that it's been about a week now.

i got one on my leg, the touched up, then just recently redone. its i have never had that happen, if its still swollen, the artist could have used too much pressure when applying the tatto which could result in raised scarring for life, or a long time at least. i could also be infected, go back to where she got it and see what they say, or go to a doctor, the can help also.
