I've seen some compatibility issues with applications at work related to IE 7 versus IE 6. Unfortunately I've also seen applications have problems related to FireFox, but these are usually related to scripting checks not including FireFox as a valid browser option. The suggestion through the IT department at work is to stick with IE 6 and FireFox 2. Compatibility testing continues with IE 7 but until some of the intranet sites are updated, we're holding off on IE 7.

Personally, I go with any browser other than IE. The IE application is too closely tied into the operating system and any exploits tend to be more severe due to this architecture. FireFox, Netscape, and Opera all essentially run in their own containers so exploits can be a bit less severe. Open source browsers also have an advantage of having a faster exploit to patch life cycle to handle exploits.

I do alot of work with mapping software (ArcGIS). Not sure why, but the latest version of IE really messes with this software, but there is no conflict with Firefox (so I prefer Firefox).
