Contact the red cross, they will be able to tell you the current policy. While I was in, the policy was that parents, siblings, and grand parents were all considered immediate family and you could therefore receive emergency leave for their death.
Sorry for your loss.

I don't think grandparents are considered immediate family, unless they were his guardian at some point. Contact the Red Cross. They will get ahold of your son's commander. If your son hasn't had his R & R they might just move it up so he can make it home for the funeral. I think its going to depend on what his unit is currently doing and who is commander is though. I'm sorry for your loss.

This happened to me in 1988. My grandmother died and my parents contacted me unit through the Red Cross. Because it was not considered "immediate" family I had to get a loan emergency loan in the form of a plane ticket from the Red Cross. My commander granted me emergency leave.
I had to repay the cost of the ticket under an installment plan.
However, this is wartime and maybe things have changed.
But if you want him home call the Red Cross now!

You just need to contact your local American Red Cross office. They will send an AMCROSS Message to your sons command. Once his command receives the message it will be determined by your sons chain of command if he will be allowed to come home or not. WIthout this message the chances of him coming home just because mom said so are slim to none. They will work things out on the otherside once the message is received, which should be the same day the message is sent.

Not that I am aware of. Call the Red Cross though. They can help you at least get the message to him. Make sure you have information about the funeral home (including address), veiwing, funeral itself. They need all that stuff. I'm sorry for your loss.

The military is pretty open about that.
Contact the Red Cross now they know how to get the message to him and get the ball rolling to get him home.

This might qualify for some compassionate leave to attend the funeral or be with his family. Contact your local office of the American Red Cross, and they can help you.
