I also have this kind of hair, Just make sure you have a good cut first. I use Loreal mousse on it while it's wet and tame it with a hair tie until dry, When I loosen it, it has more of a controlled wave. A bit wild still, but I find all the men I've ever been with have said that was the attraction...

This kind of hair does not actually respond that well to serums - they will just sit on the shaft of the hair and whilst it will feel silky on your hands when you touch it you are not benefiting your hair at all. Can I suggest you look at a line called "Organics" - they use olive oil and carrot oil etc. It keeps your hair nice and soft. So a good process for you would be:
Wash hair gently in warm water using Organics Aloe Shampoo or Soft and Beautiful Botanical shampoo.
Condition with either of the above's conditioners and add an egg yolk to it ( your hair will love it)
Massage in gently
Wrap your hair in a plastic bag or cling film and then wrap it in a warm towel for 40 mins or so.
Rinse in luke warm water and progress through to cold water.
Pat dry (don't rub) or let dry naturally
Try not to use a dryer, you are trying to put moisture back into your hair. Try not to wash your hair every day - you are stripping it of it's natural oils
Apply Organics range mouisturisors to your scalp (lightly) and apply to the ends of your hair. Don't overload your hair - to much product will just sit there and then rub into your pillow at night giving you spots! Stay away from drying mousses and sprays - think locking moisture in . I know you say you can't get to an afro hairdresser but there are so many sites you can look at for info and most companied deliver products straight to your dooir via the internet. The products I mentioned are not expensive so it would be well worth a try - good luck - I know how much hair nightmare's can get you down.

you could relax ur hair with optimum hair relaxer. It straightens the hair from the roots a bit and its easier to brush and lays down a bit more..
to straighten it you should blowdry it and put a serum on it..then iron it then if its got some flyaways you should add the tiniest bit of spray or even more serum but be careful as it may turn out oily if you put too much.

If you have your hair relaxed it will make a huge diffrence - u could still have your hair straight or curly. You could try purchasing some black hair products over the internet e.g pinks.
Boots do a hair relaxer but i dont know if it is any good. If all else fails why dont you just have it braided.

A professional can chemically relax or straighten your hair. I have Diana Ross hair without such. They can damage the hair if you have them too often, so be careful. And don't try to do it yourself, have a professional do it for you and you'll be glad.
