until they, or a family member of theirs, have a serious problem that their science cannot solve? Why do they wait until then to beg God for assistance? Is this a sign of strength that they are willing to accept him despite their past ignorance, or a sign of weakness and cowardliness that they do not hold to their previous convictions during their darkest hour?

In schools, nowadays, religions are not allowed to be taught.
All scholarly subjects are considered as scientific, that is the study of dust and nothing above it. So, where do the students, the intellectuals, the leaders of society, learn about the existence of the One True God?
The longer this unreasonable condition continues, the darker will be our long-suffering planet

they dont think he exsists because that's what they believe. It drives me nuts to think of all of these babling christians out there that say god exsists, your religion is wrong. No one knows if he actually exsisted or not, so it's wrong of them to say I am right and you are wrong and it's wrong of me to say I know he doesn't exsist. I don't know that he doesnt exsist, I just do not believe that he does, similar to atheists, but apart from them as well. I was a christian for fifteen years just wanting to believe what everyone said was right, then i started venturing and found buddhism and never once have i prayed to god since i started practicing. Buddhism is what is right for me, christianity is what is right for most and others fall in other catergorys. The fact of the matter is though that i do not think atheists pray to god in there darkest hour, why pray to something that you do not believe exsists.

Stop generalising, it is really annoying, patronising and arrogant (as well as ignorant). I used to believe in god, like many Atheists. that is how we became so convinced that there is not God. I questioned many of the biblical teachings, went in search of answers and couldn't find them. I opened my mind and came to the conclusion that god does not exist. It was in my darkest hours that I found strength in myself, not some desperate belief in a mighty power that never manifests itself.

Why would I turn to a fictitious character in my darkest hour? It won't happen. I could just as well pray to Mickey Mouse during tough times, it would have the same effect. Or maybe you also think Mickey Mouse is real?

I think you did your research by watching "O Brother Where Art Thou."

I don't know any athiest (and I know quite a few, myself included) who has suddenly turned to god in despair. Athiests don't go turning into believers just because of some tragedy in their lives.

You are generalizing, and insulting, those people who have a different belief system than yours...who is the coward?

Funny. I know a few Atheists who deny the existence of God, then when things go wrong the first thing they shout is:

"Oh GOD!!"

I have been tempted to ask who they are talking to.

you generalise
i know many atheists who do not pray no matter how difficult the circumstances
they would be there , give love and compassion , do all they can in those darkest hours for those they love
they do not believe in God ... why would they pray to something they dont believe in ?
or do you just want to think they do ?

It's called "Death bed conversion" but I know many atheists who would never beg God for anything. It's not what they believe in.

I have faced the malady of mortality. I didn't once cry out to god. You are generalizing again.

So from the answers you read below It would seem you are incorrect. I think it is you who need god but are having issue with the fact that he doesnt answer.
