Well, first of all,the English language is wide-spread due to the old English Commonwelth; that`s why it is still spoken in countries like India, Australia, New Zeeland and so on. Secondly, English became a well-known language due to its quite easy-to-learn grammar and somehow easy words. Then, if you think of the US and it`s blossomy commerce and trade, it is quite easy to understand why English is so important. And last but not the least, computers made a great deal in making English such an important language, because computer`s language is... English. So thank Gates, too:)

Because England colonized everywhere and made its language the standard one, I'm guessing. The United States started with some religious outcasts from England who came over and basically took over the land from the Native Americans, then evolved into an English-speaking superpower. So between the UK and the US, it's our fault.
English is now the international language of business, which certainly makes it important for international communication. The way I see it, and this may be wrong, English is to Business what Latin is to Medicine.
