Endorphins are proteins within the brain that act as neurotransmitters to the nervous system. To date there have been over twenty types of endorphins demonstrated in humans beings with pain and stress among the largest factors of triggering their release. The proteins interact with the opiate receptors in the brain reducing our perception of our pain much like codeine would when taken.

The release of endorphins vary amongst individuals. Tolerance levels are different for everyone so someone that can moderately exercise and feel an endorphin rush, others will have to work harder to get close to the same results. That is why usually runners and those that work out hard have the highest levels of endorphin release. It also shows that continuous and prolonged exercise will produce more and more secretions of endorphins which is what helps motivate some to continue a regimen.

Sex is also good for triggering endorphin release as well as chocolate and has much to do with the comforting feelings brought about through both.

Acupuncture, massage and chili peppers also trigger endorphin release. The spicier the chili pepper, the more endorphins secreted.

Endorphins will spike after any type of exercise that gets your heartbeat up. The first couple times your exercise it's more of a high as your body's not used to it. Stick with it and you'll feel better after every workout.

As odd as it seems, getting involved with anything to do with S&M, the body then starts registering pain as pleasure because of the effects caused by the endorphin release, basically a morphine addiction.
