If you are just an occasional casual runner then shoes don't really matter too aweful much. But, if you run everyday or go on runs of more than a couple miles the right shoes are a definite must. I had a friend who ran in Chuck Ts breifly. That didn't last long. They were awesome in the 50's, but shoe technology has come a loooooong was since then. Running in shoes that aren't right for you will almost always lead to injury. Its worth the money on a good pair to avoid getting injured. If there are no specialy running shoe stores near you, you could probably get a good idea of the type of shoe you need looking around online some.

Chucks are extremely bad for running in! Like someone else said, they were good back in the '50's, but this is 2007; we've got shoes that feel like they're custom made for your feet! Even if you're just a casual runner, you should not run in Chucks; if you're casual, any old pair of tennis shoes will do. If you're thinking about becoming serious, I'd go to a specialty running store, or somewhere like Dick's Sporting Goods and get shoes fitted for your feet. Save the Chucks for times when you aren't exercising.

Good running shoes are the single most important piece of equipment a runner can have, other than legs. Getting the right running shoes for your biomechanics can drastically reduce your risk of injury as well as the amount of PAIN that running gives you. Good running shoes are a lot cheaper than doctor's bills. Make sure you go to a good specialty running store to get shoes, not a Big 5 or other large sporting goods store. The staff at a good specialty running store will watch you run or walk and suggest shoes for you based on the way your feet and ankles move when you step (your gait).

definitely, proper shoes are the most important thing you can get for running. Those Chuck Taylors will end up hurting your feet and getting you injured.

It's amazing...as kids, we used Chuck Taylors for everything.
They do not give the proper support, cushion or stability needed for running.
I have 3 pairs of running shoes, all for different terrains:
Reebok DMXs for street running (excellent cushion)
Saucony for beach running (excellent stability)
Nike Air Trainers for the treadmill (OK cushion, great flexibility)
When I first started running, I used various sneakers in my closet (hiking shoes, trainers, fashion, etc.). That resulted in inflamed knee ligaments.
So, yes, proper shoes are the first step to good running!

running shoes are the most important thing for running. its really the only thing you need to run but chucks are really bad. you can go to a running store and they can give you shoes that are good for your foot and the way you run.

absolutely, they will provide your feet with the support & cushioning they need to prevernt injury & will also be lightweight to help you run quicker. next to every day trainers, there really is no comparison. also, if u want to run more than a few times a week you need to have several pairs of shoes so that the same stresses aren't continually put on your foot..& so ur shoes have time to "recover" between runs
