Recent research by computer security professionals has shown that over 50% of cracks and keygens are actually viruses, trojans or malware of some sort. The web pages of warez sites are also often configured to infect your computer. The operators probably get a cut of the profit when your credit card numbers or bank account info is stolen, or if your computer is used to store child porn for profit or made part of a botnet. That's assuming they didn't infect the files themselves and just use the warez site to distribute their malware.

Some, but not all, keygens and cracks contain troyans or viruses in them. Also on some sites you need to upload some "safe" software before downloading any warez. This software is a really spyware or adware. Others may ask for valkid email address before downloading to fill-up their spam bases. Different ad's of XXX sites is good profit also.

Some are run via donations/dues (these usually require a membership fee).

Some are run via advertising (often pornographic advertising...and usually annoying).

And there are a few (very few) that are just free, hosted by a benevolent person or organisation.
