Do not focus on the gift but on the giver of that gift (which is God) or in that same perspective.

I don't think this is exactly what you are looking for...

Proverbs 18:16
A gift opens the way for the giver and ushers him into the presence of the great.

I do not recall a verse regarding the gift and giver, but there is one about worshipping the creation instead of the creator. Is this what you're thinking of? It is Romans 1:25 (even those who exchanged the truth of God for the lie and venerated and rendered sacred service to the creation rather than the One who created, who is blessed forever. Amen. )

Sure be sure to pay attention to the giver because if you play it well you will get more.

Most gifts are not worth having any way. If it is a good one then grab it and run.
