I'm a backpacker currently working in Melbourne and I would very much like to take a trip down to Tasmania for a week before moving up to Sydney.I've heard loads of great things about Tasmania, most of the backpackers I met just can't stop raving about it.(got me all psyched about the trip all the more) But, here comes the problem, I couldn't quite make up my mind on how I should get there, I know there are basically two options, either go take the ferry or catch a flight.which cost pretty much the same. I am the kind of person who enjoys making friends while travelling but the ferry rides takes way too long,I don't wannna get off the ferry feeling sick and sore all over, but on the other hand,it's a better way for me to meet and chat with other travellers.I'm in a dilemma now and would appreciate any suggestions from anyone, preferably backpackers who is touring in Australia.Cheers:-)

(There are two ferries) it is about a half day voyage but many people say its the only way to go and it gives you an opportunity to go to cradle mountain, the raspberry farm, etc on the way to Lonny, drop into the gorge, the winneries and any number of other things before heading south through the historic midlands.
PS Tasmania is a very parochial place, the people in the south forget that anythinbg exists beyond bridgewater (hobarts northern suburbs) and the Northerners think hobart is best forgotten about.
The ferrries ar often booked in advance so check on that. I would either sail in and fly out of Hobart or Fly into Hobart and sail out of Dport.
Any way have fun.

Ferry is or was an overnight trip, depends when it leaves now, I have not been on it for a good while. You will not get seasick unless it is reaaaaaaly rough. One trip I made you could hear the ship bows thumping the waves and it was lurching a bit but I just slept through it all. Another trip was smooth as glass and I hardly slept a wink. It would be a much better way to meet others and you might link up for the trip round the island. Don't miss the wild west coast.

Your quite correct on several counts.
Tassie IS a gorgeous (natural) place. Everyone loves it.

And there IS only two methods of transpportation (unless you know someone who is sailing down)
Flight or ferry.
I think also the ferry is booked in advance.
The quickest and most efficient method is to fly from Melbourne to Hobart.
It is often the cheapest too, if you get an internet deal with (QANTAS's) Jet Star or Virgin Blue.

I hope you go, it is worth the trip (no matter how you decide to travel).
You will meet people from all over the country whom have moved there from other states. Attracted by the more sedate lifestyle, magical scenery, cheaper cost of housing and more moderate climate.

sprit of Tasmania takes you from melb to tas. even though it does take all day or all evening and in case you e book a seat merely it will be extremely uncomfortable, when we went we sailed at evening and were given a cabin to sleep. i'd bypass one way on the ferry and fly any incorrect way! google search for tourism victoria and tourism tasmania too! solid success!

I say take the plane, plenty of options for you to meet people in Tassie. It's a great place to go for the scenery, beautiful views! And Port Arthur holds quite a bit of history

I say take the ferry! It will be more of a adventure than a plane trip.

You'll meet more people that way and most likely you will not be seasick.
