When someone says that dinosaurs were only around a few thousand years ago, I feel a strange compulsion to intervene in case someone else gets bad information.

It's a civil service.

You're welcome.

in my group of friends i do not have the loudest voice, especially after everyones had a few wines. i don't like to interrupt or be interrupted. i also appreciate that not all my friends are interested in what i'm interested in. and what are the rules about discussions at the dinner table? no politics and no religion. it always ends in tears. but i like to talk about these things nonetheless.
and for all i know you guys could all be fake, a computer programme designed to make me feel like i was interacting. but even the act of writing down stuff i think about makes everything make a bit more sense to me.

It depends on individual motive...some people use Yahoo Answers to make themselves think they are being "evangelical christians" or "fishers of men" from the anonymous comfort of home...some people use it to trade cooking recipies. I piddle around on here because I've always thrived on the feeling of superiority and accomplishment I get when I help someone solve a problem, or learn to think for themselves, or when I'm mad and want to rant/bag on people, because I find pleasure in making fun of others when I feel crappy. :D

It allows us to explore ourselves to the fullest without fear of reprisal and without being shouted down while we speak. I don't know about you, but I hate being cut off or shouted down while I am trying to get my point across. This forum removes that rudeness and arrogance that so many people seem to want to express toward others. Yes, there are boundaries of conduct that we must stick to, but that exist anywhere in life.

It's different for different people - among the tops are:
to get decent answers where you have always wondered / been missing one;
to learn something;
to find out more about your own views;
to find out how good your answers are compared to other people;
to get as many points as possible;
to ensure that justice prevails in the voting; ...
