should I just ask my vet for Ivermectin and get the correct dose -- or do you think the Nu heart brand is okay to try?
or any other suggestions ??

If the Veterinary Medical Authority of Australia has approved it, I'd say its more than safe to use. The FDA is usually slower to approve products, especially veterinary products. NuHeart has the exact same concentration of ivermectin as HeartGard Plus , which has been used for many years (and FDA approves)

I have been using Ivermectin for the last 8 years on 4 different dogs with no problems at all. All 4 consistantly tested negative every year, and in San Diego CA, heartworm is a serious problem. The brand name I use is different, but the active ingredient is the same. I was using Heartgard Plus, but the vet I got that from retired; my current vet prescribes Interceptor so that is what I use now.

I say go for whatever is the easiest to use and to get on a consistant basis. Unless there is a huge price difference with plain Ivermectin being signifigantly cheaper, go with the all around easiest. Oooh, also, ask your vet if NuHeart has any other beneficial/active ingredients to it besides Ivermectin. It may protect against some other parasites as well.

Ivermectin has been used in the US for over a decade. A FEW dogs have a sensitivity to it - all are collies, shelties, astrianin shepards and other related breeds. The heartworm dose is so low that there is not usually ractions even in sensitve breeds but some folks perfer to advoid it with sensitive breeds
