You may be opening a can of worms here. There are many reason's that she may 'flip' when asked this question. Please consider her point of view and feelings.
1. You may be the product of a rape, gang rape or violent act. Only a very brave women 'keeps' her child after such an event.
2. Your father may have abused you when you were a baby/young child. He may not have visitation rights to you. She may indeed be trying to protect you.
3. She may not know and is embarrassed or ashamed to tell you and doesn't want you to be ashamed of her. Being afraid to loose your child's love can be scary.
4. He might be in prison for doing something so terrible that she doesn't want to burden you with it.
5. He might have been married and she is protecting you both.
6. He might not know about you.

Good luck. This must be difficult for you.

Firstly if you are over the age of 18 you have a right to know in my opinion. You need to know where you came from and what health issues are in the family. You might have relatives that you might like to meet. You have a right to your own heritage. It is you. It will feel a hole in your life. But at the same token what if your father is in jail how would you cope with that. What if he is a drug addict. You just don't know. Don't be too hard on your mum. She might have a reason to protect you. We all make mistakes in our past. Make sure you go easy on her. She may also feel that she has raised you all these years and loves you and doesn't want to loose you too. The best thing is to say mum I love you. Please tell me who my father is. If she doesn't tell you, you might have to consult a relative and ask them. But it would be better it came from your mum.

Well is hard because you know how she will react when you ask her. I will ask her to sit down with me we need to talk. Let her know how you feel first. You are her child she will be a little upset because she is hiding something that she is afraid to tell you because she thinks you might be upset with her.Don't judge her just listen to everything. Mom I want to know your side of the story.

Just ask her and the reason she is getting mad is probably she doesn't know herself because if she did she would have told you and other family members by now.

" I have a right to know where my genetics came from."

Leave it at that.
