its a north/south divide thing, i think. Southerners prefer dinner and Northerners prefer tea. similarly southerners call the midday meal 'lunch' and northerners favour 'dinner'. perhaps it's different for every different region.

Here in the north east, it's breakfast, dinner, tea, supper in that order.

Isn't the order supposed to be, depending on where you are from
Breakfast
11's
Lunch
Tea in the late afternoon or early evening
Dinner in the evening
Then supper late at night.
I normally eat earlier so I would call my meal tea but by the time the other half gets home his meal is dinner.
It has become very confusing because not everyone has time for breakfast now let alone all the other meal times.

I call the main cooked meal of the day dinner, whether eaten at lunch time or in the evening.
Tea consists of sandwiches, cakes etc normally eaten in the afternoon or early evening, having had a cooked meal between 1 and 2 pm.

For an informal family meal when we all get in from work or school, we'd say "tea"
For a more formal occasion, or if we go out to eat in the evening, we would say "dinner".
If I was talking to someone about what we were going to eat I would refer to it as our "evening meal".
I think that's what I'd say anyway, I always find with this sort of question that when I think too hard about it, I can't remember for sure!

It goes
Breakfast
Brunch
Lunch
Tea
Dinner
Supper
So an early evening meal is typically called Dinner though can be called Tea or Supper depending on regional variations

Being from Yorkshire, normally I say tea. However, if going to eat out at a restaurant in the evening, I generally go out for 'dinner' (even though, yes, I know, dinner to me is actually around 12ish midday).

At home though it's definitely tea.
