Steroid injections(they sedate you), their called a TFESI Trans Foraminal Epidural Steroid Injection. I've had six in my C-spine and it's a no sweat procedure. If you haven't had an MRI you need one. These injections can be effective at pain control but thier temporary at best. He might be facing a spinal fusion. I had that on my C-spine (neck) and again it really wasn't that bad.
