It all depends on what you expect from your pet. SInce some dogs are like gum stuck to your shoe and some could careless if you are home or not some want all the attention and some dont want any at all . Some people dont want dog hair around or have to worry about grooming the dog all that often etc. etc. I personally will have no other dog than a doberman preferably the king dobermans. Alot of people are scared of dobermans and think that they would be hard to handle or own or could be dangerous. Dobermans are the only dog that actually has the ability to think and reason things. They are especially fond of children. They dont shed and dont need to be brushed all the time they are very very clean dogs and are not ones to get that dog smell on them since they are very careful where they walk. Since they are big dogs most people want to leave them outside but dobermans are very protective of their families and are not very comfortable when they can not have a close eye on everyone. The best thing is to have a doggy door so the dog can go in and out as it pleases. One thing with dobermans since they are such smart dogs you have to make sure you are smarter than they are or it will be the one in charge of the house. Dobermans are like I said very fond of children and are in no way any threat to them and they are also very fond of women but every dobie I have ever had has never liked strange men or men with hats. I take my dog with me everywhere I go and before I leave him in the car I take him off to stretch his legs and then put him back in and again when I come out of where ever it was i was . Since he is really beautiful and huge he catches peoples attention and since he s coat is very shiny black people want to touch him. He will allow females and children near him but any man that tries to get close cant. Dobermans are also very energetic and playful. They do require that you pay attention to them. They are not dogs to tie up in the backyard . I like dobermans because I get the benifits of two dogs in one . I get a guard dog to watch the house while I sleep and a car alarm when I am in town and company to be around. I talk to my dog like I would a person and he has even learned to understand when I spell things out. and he is bilingual. Like I said they dont shed either so you wont have dog hair all over the place and they are very clean dogs. ANother example of how gentle they are with thier family. A female cat somehow got inside my roof and had her kittens above my kitchen ceiling then for some strange reason she dropped everyone of them inbetween the wall. SO I made a big hole in the wall and got the kittens out and they had just barely opened their eyes and I had to bottle feed them and since little kittens you have to stimulate them to potty I had to take a tissue and wipe their little bottoms at first until my dobie came up being nosey and wanted to lick their butts so i figured heck why not , better for the kitten since the tissue was more than likely going to make them sore and this way it gets done all natural. My sons dog that he left here for awhile was constantly wanting to eat the kittesn but not my dobie , he would clean the little guys up and then lay there and they would snuggle up with him. the only thing he would trip on is if they started roaming down around his penis looking for a tit to suck on and he would jump up real quick. but as long as they stayed up front he loved them. I will never have any other kind of dog . My son came home drunk one night and fell asleep sitting up and then kind of leaned sideways and had his head hanging in this wieird postion and my dobie jumped up on the couch next to him and then snuggled up against my son so that his head ended up resting on my dog. He actually went over there to hold my sons head up. As you can see I love dobies. They are just great dogs. But like I said it all depends on what kind of a dog you want to get personality wise.

I'd have to agree with one of the previous posters saying that dobies are excellent family dogs. My experience is slightly different in that I have a female and she has no problems with men approaching her to pet her. Also I'd add that while they don't blow a coat the way labs, goldens, and shepards do, there is slight shedding throughout the year, but it is quite minimal.
I wouldn't suggest the breed for a first time dog owner as they can be a lot to handle and quite hard-headed about what they want. If you think you can be firm and consistent with training, then I would highly suggest a dobie. Be sure to read up on whichever breed you choose before buying. Find out about health issues so you can be prepared and know what to expect. Also the previous poster said she would only ever have 'king' dobies. This is simply a gimmic for extra large dobies bred to be too large to fit the standard by backyard and unethical breeders (and puppymills). A dobie should be a medium-large dog. They were meant to be this size to be agile enough to do their job. Anyway, I think dobies can be great family pets. Get one from someone who had the parents temperment tested or their dogs have a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification or Therapy Dog International (TDI) certification. With any purebreed, try to spend the extra money to get a really wellbred specimen, this will severely decrease the likelyhood that you get an unhealthy dog.

The best family pets are the one that meet your expectations.

with that said any breed can have a good family pet within its numbers. Just remember that temperment is a individual trait, not a breed trait.

Though breeds are recognized for the temperment the breed should not be the primary consideration when choosing a dog. as wolf packs are very close to dog packs in the wild, and are an extended family unit containing a wide range of temperments, so do litters of puppies contain a wide range of temperments.

in my opinion a good family pet is also a hunting companion, agility novice, and friendly to people. It will have short hair for ease of care. I chose a 13 inch Beagle from hunting lines.

In the past a good family pet was a small, toy breed with low energy, and protection ability. I chose a Minature pinscher with a rare calm temperment. (as most are high energy)

this just shows how the idea of which breed is best is a personal decision, which requires time and research on the potential owners side.

I would suggest sitting down with your family and talking to them about what they want in a dog. then finding the most common features in a pure breed or mixed breed. this can take some time.

I think English Bulldogs make great family pets, but I also like French Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers. I have an English Bulldog that I am pretty sure saved one of my kids from being kidnapped. I also like Chihuahuas, but they require a lot of socialization and teaching kids how to properly handle them. They are very small so they can get hurt easily. I know most people do not want to have to be as vigiliant with watching a dog as you need to with Chihuahuas at first, so I would suggest the other ones I mentioned. It really is about what you want and will work for your family though. I would research any dog you are considering throughly before buying. They are pros and cons to all dog breeds, just like humans none are perfect. I am sure with some research you will find what will be perfect for you though. Good Luck.

It depends on your lifestyle and your personal preferences.

Do you want a dog mainly for companionship at home or do you want to get out for long walks together? How much time do you have to train and exercise your dog? Will it be left alone for certain lengths of time.? Do you want to spend time grooming it etc?

Our chidren are 2 and 4 years and we have an English Setter and a Shih Tzu. Both fit perfectly into our family but they obviously have different requirements. Both dogs are 100% trustworthy with our children as we give them what they need and they know their places in the pecking order. They are walked for at least an hour each day and are given plenty of attention and love. We take them for days out with our children and we all go camping together too. They really enhance our family life.

Obviously there are certain breeds of dogs which I would not chose as a family pet, due to their breeding etc, but I think that good training and understanding your dog will produce a good pet regardless of it's breed. In the past, we have had a Border Collie, a Beagle cross and a Bichon Frise. Although we didn't have our children at the time, they too would have made lovely familly pets.

For the average family, I think that spaniels and retrievers make good all-rounders. They are usually easy to train and have good temperaments. They are big enough to take abit of rough and tumble but still easy enough for a child to handle.

Happy choosing!

It really depends on what dog your family is in to. If you want a playful and friendly dog (that is big) you could get a Labrador or a retriever. If you want a small dog that you can carry around you could get a Shiatsu, Chihuahua, Jack Russel (they are good in hunting rats) pug or any small dog. If you want a medium size dog you can get a beagle (there are also small ones) basset-hound etc. It also depends on the dogs fur. There are two kinds of length for their fur which is long and short. E.g. = Long Japanese spitz and for the short hair = beagle, chihuahua etc... And lastly it really depends on the temperament of the dog (each dog have different personalties)

PS. Have fun in choosing a breed of dog! :D

I love Boxers. They can be hyper, but they are so affectionate. I have three and they are great with the kids. You always need to be carefully if you have little kids around a bigger dog. Never leave a child under 12 alone with a dog, unless it's a really small dog.

Personally, I think Standard Poodles are a great family pet. They don't shed, don't have doggy odor, don't bond with just one specific person in the family and are easy to train. They are the smartest dog besides the Border Collie.

I have a Golden Retriever , and a Chihuahua, as well as 4 children....Golden Retrievers are great for families....just make sure that parents are not car chasers...we failed to ask that when we got our retriever, and she chases cars . We later found out from the vet...that car chasing can be hereditary from parents. The Chihuahua is still real young, so i am hoping she will bond with the kids good.

Not a small dog... bad with kids usually.

Although pugs and cavalier king charles are supposed to be good with children.

My guess for best family dog would be a lab or golden retriever.
