Hi, it could be beyond your control. Maybe it is chemical, something you've inherited from your parents. See a doctor *psychiatrist* about being this, but also, maybe you can see a psychologist, counselor or social worker who can help you bring into focus, your life's situations that leave you blue so much.
Lastly, be sober about your life's situation. Maybe you can put your life's events in some perspective if you remember that what you feel is big or small compared to some of the pain, suffering, wins or losses that you could be experiencing.
I always try to remember that life is short, it could all be over for me at any second so try to make the most of the now. We don't have time for making small things big. Our death is always waiting for us so live fully in the now.
Try all of these things in combination. It helped me. I still get blue but one or many of these things helped me enjoy life until the wheel of time changed so that more favorable things were with me.
Feel better! A ho!

First, make an appointment to see a doctor, who will diagnose whether you are suffering from clinical depression. Since medication can take some time to be effective, go to: http://healthyplace.com/communities/ and learn and practice the meditation technique for at least 20 minutes daily. It can be invaluable in times of adverse life events, and many people find they can cope, just by using it alone, but if it is clinical depression, your brain has an imbalance of substances like serotonin, which needs medication to correct. Also see: http://beattheblues.info/? & www.depression.com/- and the blogs of Shan Eris on "tackling depression" at www.myspace.com

in addition to whatever else you try, you MUST optimize your diet and start a cross-training fitness regimen. Whole, natural, healthful foods and cardio + strength + flexibility/posture training. don't eat any junk food until you get this figured out. if you feel that you need junk food, perhaps a binge day once a week is okay at first.
then take flax oil daily and if you can afford it, purified fish oil. consider whether you might need calcium-magnesium. take a high quality multivitamin every day for a couple months, then cut it down to a couple times a week. many vitamin deficiencies can cause depression. also, vitamin surpluses can cause depression, and/or cause other vitamins to become deficient. plus, everyone is different. ultimately a good doctor who understands nutrition is your best bet. check out this guy's site: www.acu-cell.com

One thing is good is that you are asking for help. Everyone does get depressed at times in their lives. One way to help is to go out and volunteer. It lets you see how much you can help others and it lifts your spirit as well as the ones you are helping. Just to see the smiles on their faces. You can go to volunteer.org and find local organizations. You could just open a door of someone who has full hands or just smile at someone who looks like their world has fallen in. Sometimes a smile brightens their moment and their face lights up and makes your heart feel lighter too.
Here is a website that talks more about depression and has a quiz you can take to see if you are depressed: http://www.self-coaching.net/articles/depression_index.php
If you get to a point of not getting out of bed or not eating, you need to see your doctor before you get to that point.
Here is the copy of the quiz:
In evaluating your depression, it's important to determine whether a program like Self-Coaching is enough to facilitate your healing. If you notice that your functioning is deteriorating and you find your thoughts growing darker and overwhelming, the possibility of medication should be explored. If, on the other hand, you find yourself holding-your-own and managing your life in spite of a mild, or even moderate depression (as long as you’re managing), then by all means, a self-managed program may be all you need to begin to turn the tide of your malaise.
Since depression can be a serious, life-threatening condition, let’s begin with the following self-quiz to assess whether or not you might be struggling with a clinical depression. Take a look at the list below and note any symptom that you’ve experienced for more than two weeks.
1. I feel depressed, sad and/or irritated most of the day, nearly every day
2. Things that once gave me pleasure don’t interest me any longer
3. I’ve noticed a decrease or increase in my appetite with a change in my weight
4. I either sleep too much or too little
5. I’m fatigued and drained all the time
6. I feel worthless or have intense guilt most of the time
7. I can’t concentrate like I used to and find it difficult to make decisions
8. I feel restless, agitated or slowed down physically
9. I think of death often. I’ve thought of or tried to commit suicide
If you’ve experienced four or fewer of the above symptoms, you may be dealing with a mild depression (assuming you didn’t check the last box and aren’t suicidal). But, keep in mind, that even a mild depression needs your attention. A Dysthymic disorder, for example, is one particularly troublesome form of low-grade depression that can last for years with chronic feelings of sadness and hopelessness. Another, rather elusive form of mild depression, called Atypical Depression, can be difficult to evaluate because you may feel fine one day and “down” the next. Self-Coaching and Self-Coaching along with counseling can make a real difference in these struggles. In some cases, antidepressant medication may be helpful. If you choose a Self-coaching approach, retake this quiz periodically to make sure your depression is, in fact, subsiding.
If you checked five or more of these symptoms you may be experiencing a Major Depressive Episode and should consult a mental health professional or your physician. The need for antidepressant medication should be explored, especially if you’ve had suicidal thoughts or fantasies. And if you’ve had suicidal thoughts and feel out of control, you should call a health care provider immediately. Don’t hesitate! If you don’t have a person to contact, call your nearest hospital emergency room.

There are so many people who love you and look up to you that you do not even know. Do not lose your faith. Hugs to you.

I'm no doctor but I have dealt w depression for YEARS. If you have experienced depression on more than one occasion, it needs to be treated or else it is prone to just keep coming back. And especially if you have thought of killing yourself, it sounds to me that you are chemically depressed and therefore need meds to help you. Please see someone soon and take care.
