At the end of the male dogs penis he has a thing called bulbis glandus which swells up like a big knot and makes it almost impossible for the male and female to come apart until the male has calmed down and his erection begins to also go down. They were made this way since male dogs do not ejaculate the same as lets say a male human. The male dog does not squirt out in one explosion it more or less drips out so by being stuck there is a better chance of more sperm getting into the female.
