It's done in 2 stages, first visit normally takes about half an hour to 45 Min's, this is when the dentist will clean out the nerve form the tooth and place a temporary filling in side.
2Nd visit takes about 45 minutes, this is when the temporary filling is removed and any remaining nerve is cleaned out, the dentist then seals the canals with GP points, an xray is taken so the dentist will be able to see that the canals have been sealed properly, sealing the canals will prevent saliva and bacteria from flowing into the tooth and triggering off an infection.
As for the pain, it depends, if the nerve was already dead there should be no pain after the procedure, if there is any pain normal pain killers should ease it, Nurofen are effective as they also act as an anti inflammatory and will reduce any swelling around the tooth/gums!

This happened to me, as well. It is sometimes normal to feel some pain in the tooth that has been filled but just for a short time. If it persists or you notice a swelling along your gum line, you might be forming an abscess. When it happened to me, I found that I had an abscess in my perfectly normal looking tooth that the dentist had recently done a root canal on. Don't let that happen to you, sweetie. If you are having pain in the tooth that you had a root canal done on, this is not normal. Please go back to your dentist ASAP. It could be an abscess and it may need to be drained and re crowned.

Do you have a dentist that you are discussing this with?
If so, they really should be able to answer your questions.
If they aren't, and often, even if they are, it is a great idea to
get a second opinion -- to compare need, length of pain
and cost. Check also with your insurance, if you have any,
what the limits and restrictions are.
If you need root canal surgery -- do not put it off, if you can.
It will be in your best interest. Take care of yourself.

Root canals are usually done in two appointments, about 1 hour each. It really isn't that painful and afterwards it may be sore or sensitive for a couple days. Good luck.

I have had two or three and had them in 3 30 mins appointment slots they will numb you tooth and you will not feel anything and after it will be fine because they take the root out and so you will have no pain apart from your bank account lol. You will be fine dont worry just put your ipod on and listen to music and it will soon be over. Good luck.

My was finished in 2 treatments of approximately one hour and the only pain is during the shots they give to numb your gums. The whole idea is to remove the root which is the nerves under the tooth so no nerve = no pain. don't worry.
