it all depends on what happened...sometimes a diagnosis can be reached as little as minutes after occurring with the help of a brain scan (CT or PET)...other times it can take several days to find the damage (most doctors will ask you to follow-up and will keep a close eye on you for a couple of days) on a brain scan

It can take months to tell how much brain damage there is after injury. Scans won't tell you that much about a lot of different kinds of brain injury - just the major insults.
