Has any body here been through a tornado-hit area? I know that there are many organizations like the Red Cross and others that help, but what are some things that are often overlooked? If somebody wanted to help as an individual, what are some suggestions?

One of the areas that are very much needed of volunteers after a tornado is food distribution/preparation. The Salvation Army often has meals-on-wheels giving warm food for the victims and field volunteers.

Another area that is often overlooked is SECURITY. Tornados destroy homes, and yet there are valuables that the victims can recover when returning to their homes. Some times, people go to those areas and sack the left overs, adding more burden to the victims.

I have noticed that when we found items of value, such as pictures, jewelry, a mother's day gift, etc, and they are in good or reparable conditions, if we give it to the victim, the victim feels the loss was not total.

Emotional support to tornado victims must be strong and effective.

Donate to a group of Salvation Army Officers that are going to the area, things like toilet paper, socks, combs, hair ties, canvas bags, rolls of quarters
