I have a new cat rescued from the RSPCA a week ago. He's really friendly and settled in quite well and loves being fussed and sits on my lap and everything, but still runs away if approached in certain rooms that he's not familiar with.

However, come bedtime, he cries all night. He's not shut in a room and he had food and water available and a basket that he likes sleeping in as well as another cat for company, as they came as a pair.

It's loud crying and constant for about 15 minutes a time, 2 or 3 times a night. I've been to see what the fuss is a couple of times and there's nothing wrong with him. He's just standing there crying and when you go down, he just comes up for attention.

What's wrong with him? And how long is this going to carry on for?? I'm shattered!!

I wondered if it might stop once he's allowed to go outside?

Congrats on your new baby.

I think he is probably lonely. You have no idea what life he had before and he was stuck in a shelter for how long? Cats do not like change. He was taken from where ever he was and put in a shelter with all these other cats, dogs and other smells. Now he is in a new place, with another new cat and new smells.

If he is adjusting well then I would say he is lonely. I have a cat that I adopted over a year ago who still comes in my room and wakes me up at night to pet him. He is bored and lonely. We even adopted him a cat but he still does it. He likes the companionship of the other cat but what I think he wants is my affection, petting. I just pet him for 30 seconds and he lays down on the bed and goes to sleep. Is your bedroom door open at night? If not try leaving it open. If you hear him crying try calling him into your room. I also leave different toys out at night. A helium balloon, a newspaper, balls, fake mice are some of his favorites. Those things seem to keep him occupied.

First of all, good for you for rescuing not one but two cats! You must have a really kind heart.
I know what you're talking about regarding the crying. My cat when I was growing up also had a little cat buddy. We put them in the basement for the night (it was a huge finished basement...they had tons of room). However, this one in particular cried and cried all the time, and the other one didn't. I think it's just because they're lonely. The most important thing is not to give in. Once you start feeling guilty and let it sleep with you, it will become a routine.
There's really nothing you can do, ignore it and let it go to sleep. Maybe an option is, if he's not tired because he sleeps all day, try playing with them with cat toys before bedtime. This might make him more tired.
Good luck.

This cat may be suffering from loneliness. It will have to get used to the new enviroment before it gets used.It must be calling for some attention. At RSPCA it must have been living with other cats, whose presence it is missing.Dont worry as the time goes it will get used and it will finally settle in the new enviroment.

Don't let him outside, he'll try to go back where he came from. That's natural instinct.

As for the crying, do you close your bedroom door? If he's responding to you so well during the day, maybe he resents being shut out at night.

sometimes they only get "homesick" over the abode which you left. I moved temporarily as quickly as and my cat cried and hid interior the closet the completed time we've been interior the place of abode. it fairly is in basic terms their way of asserting they are dissatisfied and not used to their environment. in basic terms provide it time.

he might stop but i think it is just because he is lonely at night when there is nothing to do. im afraid he will probably just need to wear himself out, either that or leave him some toys? we have had animals that do that, maybe he would be happier sleeping else where? but he is probably missing his home, you may not know all his history or routine and it may have just messed him up abit? poor thing! give him abig squeeze for me!x

He is probably lonely, try letting him sleep on your bed. My cat has always slept on the bed and in the cold weather, she gets under the duvet.

maybe you could put his basket in your room during the night, maybe he is still feeling a little scared about being left alone in the night. he might feel better if he knows you are close.
