Why do people continue to believe in religion's lies?

it's like some kind of inverse mexican standoff. if they quit believing, their family and social group will pretty much disown them. most of them want out, because part of them seeks the truth, but unless they all 'put down their guns' at once, they can't get out. also, some people would become extremely depressed if they didn't have religion. so it's also like when you dress up and pretend you're a movie star.

Perhaps it is that we see a differant facet of the Jewel of Ultimate Truth than you do and the facet we see includes a framework for understanding that we agree to call a "religion"

Just because you understand PART of the truth, does not mean you understand it all. I believe in the faith I practice -- my religion, if you will, but I also understand that there are things that I will never understand, DESPITE my efforts.

One of the Great Philosophers, Socrates, valued the search for wisdom above everything else except maybe true justice. That is where we get the word philosophy (lit. "love of wisdom") To call all religion lies, IMO is to miss the underlying point of all of them being frameworks for looking at the universe and hopefully acquireing wisdom.

We believe because they are not lies. The intellect was created to seek the truth. Our intellects tell us what our religions tell us are thruths not lies. So only the truth shall set us free. Religion sets men free from evils and immorality. This is why we believe.

Well I believe because it has not been proven we came from apes,just because a coke head had a theory doesn't mean it is correct.We are to complex to have not have been created by a God.Plus it gives people hope of an after life spent with the all mighty in a place of peace,love and tranquility.

Why must you resort to calling religious beliefs "lies"? Do you not have any better arguments to make?

I guess not -- which means that you must be pretty desperate to put down religion. Probably because it teaches certain moral things that you just do not want to hear.

People won't believe things that they thought were lies, they believe things that they think are real. People have the right to do that don't they?

Religious leaders typically want to impact society, and will make use of metaphoric, interpretive language. "Interpretations" aren't really lies. They also aren't really truth, but just TRY to reason with someone who is enthusiastically trying to inspire (put the "spirit in") other people. You might as well just go to church because these freaky people need jobs and they don't want to do REAL work like CARPENTRY.

It's only "lies" to you because you have faith in nothing. Just because you do not agree with it does not mean that it is a lie. If others are comforted and prosper in their faith, what does it matter to you? Nobody is twisting your arm to believe anything, so why deter others from living satisfied and fulfilling lives?

I think Earth is being affected(effected-I never got that right) by an outside force(Reagan) It seems people look at each other, say something, but no one understands each other, then violence pursues.
